Questions about
Qualifications

What Qualifications do I gain from your course?

You gain automatic Level 3 Reps membership, a Yoga Alliance 200hr accreditation, and a CYQ qualification level 3. These are internationally recognised accreditations allowing you to work anywhere in the UK and the rest of the world including Australia and NZ and the US.

NOTE: We will soon be a QFC course, which will take us to a Level 4 Diploma Course by 2012. Keep looking out for info. Join our mailing list. This will mean an advanced 6-week course to add to your other hours.

How many contact hours do I do on a course and can I do those with other SPY teachers?

You log in 180 contact hours and 60 guided learning hours (approx). Contact hours are with your Primary tutor (Anne-Marie or other) only. Guided learning hours are for study at home and teaching practice.

If I do a 2-week residential how can I qualify in such a short time?

You will clock in 150 contact hours while away – working from 6am to 7pm each day. Your breaks are also working lunches, study time and Karma Yoga (clearing and cleaning) when you return home you can continue with your SPY homework and CYQ coursework. You have 3 months to complete this.

While we are away on a residential do we have exams?

Yes, you will take your CYQ practical, SPY exam and if you have revised enough before your course, your EFK Level 3 (Exercise and Fitness Knowledge) this is your written part for your CYQ/Level 3 Reps qualification.

When I qualify, am I expected to teach only SPY?

We do not train you like that. We teach you to be a responsible, inspiring and knowledgeable teacher with a class guideline. However, we are all individuals and one teaches as individuals.

Do I have to be flexible to do the course?

NO A flexible mind will do nicely thank you – the body we help you with during the course!

I am over 50. Am I too old to do the course?

NO We need mature teachers to encourage more mature people to start yoga later on in life. In addition, you inspire young people.

Questions about
Fees

What are the fees and are there any hidden extras?

Our “extras” are not hidden! Your fees are uploaded and reviewed each year, so check the application pack & website. Your “extras” are the CYQ fees for exams, administration and certificate. We do not add this to your fees as not everyone wants to do this qualification. They may only want to do SPY 200hrs & Yoga Alliance 200hrs.

What is included in the fees?

Included in your fees are your SPY Course manuals, your tuition, SPY exam fees and Certification plus uniform.

What is not included in the fees?

Your CYQ fees £150 to date for Certificate, Exam, Admin. Your reading list can be borrowed or bought from past students. Amazon does second hand books too. Travel and fares are not included. Instructional DVD’s and CYQ manuals are not included.

What is included in your residential course fees?

In Spain, we include tuition, SPY manuals, and CYQ manuals, 3 meals a day, accommodation, and transfer fees along as you try to arrive with others in your group.

In Greece, we include your tuition, SPY manuals, and S/C accommodation only

I am struggling with finding the fees. Can you help?

Yes, we have an installment scheme, interest free. We try to match a payment plan to your needs.

Funding. Do you have any way I could get some funding to do your course?

Yes through the Job Centre, The Learning and Skills Council and the North East Development Agency. Please ask for more details on applying.

I would like my partner to do this course with me. Do you have any reductions?

Yes. We give you a discount of £100 each and to help with travel, books etc.

Questions about
Exams

I am worried about exams. I never passed any at school.

We are learning champions. We will give you all the support you need to help you with the exam. You can take it orally or someone else can do the writing, for instance. One of our teams specialist learning areas is Dyslexia, so she teachers with learning at the core not just the content.

What is the practical exam?

This is where you get a chance to prove your teaching skills, and all you have learned on the course. You will have prepared a class plan for a 90-minute class. It’s what the course is all about in the end.

How are we assessed on our practical teaching?

We work by a set of criteria that you need to match. This criteria is worked on throughout your course and during your teaching practice. You will lean to self evaluate and assess others.

What happens if I fail a written or practical assessment?

You never fail – just not passed yet. We say you have ‘referred’. You can do any exams again on the next course.

What if I refer a 2nd time?

Then you will try again. Never stress – you will get there!

Questions on
other subjects

How many years experience do I need to come on a Training Course?

As long as you have been practising for 2 years or come from a sport/medical background or are a fitness professional at level 2 or 3 we can accept you.

I am disabled. Can I learn to be a teacher?

Yes! We have a policy to promote all abilities in our school. You would need to let us know your level of limitations and needs to make sure we can accommodate you.

What is Sun Power Yoga’s policy on equal opportunities?

We hold a policy of equal opportunities. To include race, culture, religion, ability or learning skills. This can be seen in our manuals and on request.

I have a family and am concerned I cannot do the course work too?

Our experiences have been that people with families have to manage their time and they are excellent in doing that on the course. It is sometimes our single students that find that harder!

I don’t drive. How can I get to Leicester/London if I decide to take a course there?

We do our very best to help you car share. The other option is to get a cheap B&B the night before or we can ask other students to help put you up for the night. We find this is a very good way for our students to bond.

You seem very family orientated. Does that mean that if a child is ill or childcare is an issue are you able to give some leeway?

Yes! Anne Marie has 4 children and she makes sure you put family first! That includes Dads as well as Mums and Carers.

How long is your UK Intensive Course, 3 months every day or one day a week?

We run 12-week courses. You spend one full Sunday with us each week.

What happens if I have to miss a week for any reason?

You can make it up on the next course; you will join our subscription scheme after finishing. For £75 for the year, you can come to 8 teacher-training days to complete contact hours and hours missed. In addition, the fee gives you entry onto our website and links to your contact details and website.

What if I am injured before the course or get ill?

If this happens then I will ask you for a letter from your GP. This then allows you to defer to another course with no extra charges.

Can I come on a TT day to see if I like SPY style and the team?

Of course! In fact, we encourage you to do that. It is also very useful for us to meet you and answer questions or allay fears.

Do you support us after the course?

Oh yes! We are very much a family. We are at the end of the phone or e-mail to help with teaching, personal or professional issues.
